Commitment

Making a program year commitment

Members must commit to serving for 11 months (August 2010 – June 30, 2011), completing 1720 hours of service for full-time members (40 hours/week) or 920 hours of service for part-time members (20 hours/week) throughout the year.

Members must be available to serve on weekdays (Monday-Friday) during normal school hours. The member’s schedule must be consistent. Occasional weekend or evening work may be required for member trainings, meetings and/or community service activities.

Attending pre-service and ongoing trainings

Members are required to attend  trainings throughout the year. These trainings include a pre-service orientation in their first week of service, a pre-service Member Institute on literacy techniques, and ongoing trainings, which include civic engagement training, literacy refreshers, and other topics for member development.

Completing civic engagement activities

Members are required to complete a minimum of five civic engagement activities throughout the year in an effort to become more connected to their community. Examples of these activities may include volunteering at a local nonprofit, attending a city council meeting, voting, serving on a committee, contacting a legislators, etc.
