Become a Volunteer

You can make a difference.

Caring volunteers trained to work with students on specific literacy skills are a powerful presence in the lives of students learning to read. Your time, patience and smiles can make all the difference in the literacy success of children in your community.

Volunteer opportunities are available at a limited number of Minnesota Reading Corps sites including Albert Lea, Duluth, Grand Rapids, Mankato, Minneapolis, Rush City, St. Cloud and St. Paul. The following opportunities to become involved are available:

Ongoing Volunteer Literacy Tutor
Volunteer tutors provide literacy activities and reading opportunities to children in small groups and one-on-one environments. Tutors work with students in Kindergarten - 3rd grade.

Time Commitment: In order to provide consistent support for the children in our program, we ask that Volunteer Literacy Tutors commit to at least 1 hour each week for a minimum of 3 months.

Qualifications:  You must have English reading and writing skills and a desire for motivating children to learn! Detailed tutor training is provided upon successful completion of a background check.

Special Events Volunteer

There are a variety of episodic opportunities available for volunteers with schedules that don't allow for a weekly commitment. Special Event Volunteers participate in a variety of literacy-related activities hosted at Reading Corps sites. Prior activities include guest readers, family literacy nights, lunch reading buddies, etc.

Organize a Book/Sticker Drive
Minnesota Reading Corps members are always in need of quality books to encourage their students to develop a love of reading. Stickers also act as powerful motivators for students. Organize a book or sticker drive to donate to Reading Corps. For more information or to discuss your idea, please contact Alison Jirik at 612-206-3031 or ajirik@mnedc.org.
